Donald Trump’s position on abortion is bonkers.
Donald Trump seems to think that having a state government and a bunch of strangers telling women and doctors what to do is somehow the reasonable position.

When Republicans are arguing about which government —state or federal — should control access to healthcare, they’ve lost the thread entirely.
Kamala Harris calls state laws that limit or ban abortions “Trump abortion bans.” And she should. Trump said he would appoint justices that would overturn Roe. He picked justices from a list provided to him of people who would overturn Roe, and then those justices, predictably, overturned Roe. He has bragged multiple times since the ruling that he himself got rid of Roe.
Every state ban that has come since Roe was overturned is only possible because of Donald Trump.
Since people do not like having life-and-death healthcare decisions made for them by strangers and governments, Republicans across the board — including Trump — have faced backlash.
While Donald Trump is nothing if not chaotic and unpredictable, one thing that is guaranteed is he has no real ideas or beliefs. He will say whatever he thinks will make the people he’s with to at the moment like him. And because he didn’t like the abortion backlash, he and his handlers have settled on a new position: abortion decisions should go back to the states.
For some reason, most media outlets have been reporting this as a “softening” of his position on abortion. But is simply false. His position view maintains the status quo at this moment, and that status quo is killing women.
Why is sending abortion back to the states bonkers?
Sending abortion back to the states means that a governmental body is still interfering with a woman’s fundamental right to control her body.
Letting the voters decide is allowing thousands of people who are not doctors and not the woman who needs care to decide on the status of a basic right.
Sending abortion to the states means a fundamental right is subject to the whims of geography.
Sending abortion back to the states means that the rules can change month to month or year to year. With no federal protection for abortion, a woman could become pregnant in a state that allows care and live in a state that doesn’t while she is pregnant because some seats in a legislature changed hands and the law changed. People in states like Florida had appointments cancelled because abortion was illegal one day and literally illegal the next. This is an insane way to run healthcare policy.
According to Trump, “My view is, now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land.”
This is not a reasonable position. This is not a sane position. This is a dangerous position that is killing women. Don’t let him fool you into thinking he is becoming “moderate.”
